With nearly a quarter of all MCO-managed Medicaid members enrolled in its plans, Centene dominates the Medicaid segment at a time when the COVID-19 economic downturn is expected to drive as many as 16 million Americans into Medicaid eligibility. The carrier is also a dominant player on the ACA health insurance marketplaces, where millions of Americans who have lost their employer-sponsored coverage may be shopping for a plan. The carrier is also pursuing an ambitious expansion in Medicare Advantage for 2021, although it witnesses some declines in marketplace enrollment for 2021. In its pharmacy operations, Centene continues to integrate with WellCare and will add to its expertise by purchasing PANTHERx Rare, a company specializing in orphan drugs and rare conditions.
