The merger of Centene and WellCare has benefitted Anthem through business divestitures required for the deal to pass regulatory muster. Because the combined company would have dominating shares of Medicaid lives in Missouri and Nebraska, Anthem purchased WellCareÕs business in those states, improving its footprint in the Midwest.
