Powerful mergers in the past few years have injected the Spokane market with increased resources, but several growth plans and organizational blueprints for the market’s influential health systems were disrupted in 2020 following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Providence and MultiCare received millions in federal aid through the federal CARES Act to help them keep afloat during the crisis after Providence saw its revenues dip significantly and MultiCare furloughed a few hundred workers in the market. Recent legislation has also impacted the market, including prohibitions on surprise billing and the switch to state funding for school employees' insurance coverage.
