Although the COVID-19 pandemic remains top of mind, health systems in the Greenville market and BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina are addressing the prevalence of cancer and diabetes in the market and state. Prisma Health, the market’s dominant integrated delivery system, and the market’s top health plan are teaming with other organizations on Diabetes Free SC, a statewide initiative addressing healthcare disparities for patients with diabetes. Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System–Gibbs Cancer Center, AnMed Health, and Bon Secours St. Francis Health have formed the Upstate Carolina National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program, which connects cancer patients in the Upstate to clinical trials, allowing patients to receive treatment close to home. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina remains the dominant insurer in the market, although it does not dominate Medicare Advantage or Medicaid enrollment, and employers are showing more interest in direct contracting but are hesitant to make the move. The Trump Administration has approved South Carolina’s Medicaid work requirement, but it is not known if or when the requirement will be implemented.
