The market’s leading health systems continue to eye future expansion needs while providers brace for the financial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Novant Health has won a bid to expand its footprint across the state through a deal to partner with New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington as CaroMont Health moves forward with plans to build its second hospital in the market. Independent physicians, however, are struggling to maintain operations amid declining patient visits caused by the pandemic. Physicians who split from health systems to expand a Tennessee-based independent practice, Holston Medical Group, have recently joined Atrium Health as the group significantly scales back its Charlotte-area operations, citing financial difficulties. As COVID-19 takes a financial toll on the healthcare market, look for payers and providers to temporarily decelerate value-based care transformation.
