A much-awaited bidding process for managed care plans to serve Medicaid beneficiaries in Washington, D.C., resulted in the selection of its three existing MCOs, as well as Unison Health Plan, which is set to be purchased by UnitedHealth Group. Mid-Atlantic health plans are working to maintain or grow their enrollment bases through new products – Virginia-based Optima Health has introduced new group and individual products, and Kaiser Permanente is seeing results from its Flexible Choice product giving clients access to a broader network. Medicare managed care plans are seizing opportunities in the private fee-for-service market with UnitedHealth Group targeting Virginia and the District of Columbia and Aetna expanding into Richmond and Tidewater areas of Virginia.
