Expect Presbyterian Healthcare Services to remain the dominant player in Albuquerque for the foreseeable future. The Presbyterian integrated delivery network of care sites, employed physicians, and a popular health plan allow it to take on risk under value-based contracts that its rivals in the market have not yet been able to match. Physician independence, already limited by the large employed groups of Presbyterian, UNM Health Sciences Center, and Lovelace Medical Group, was further reduced by UnitedHealth’s acquisition of DaVita Medical Group, the last large independent group in Albuquerque. The state’s shift to a new managed Medicaid program contract, Centennial Care 2.0, cut UnitedHealth and Molina Healthcare from the program in favor of a Centene subsidiary, which has led UnitedHealth to scale back its presence in the state. Molina will launch a Medicaid MCO with and for the Navajo Nation in the state, which could lead it to explore similar arrangements elsewhere in the Southwest.
