Orange County boasts some of the nation’s wealthiest cities and continues to be the state’s epicenter for healthcare reform and innovation. New initiatives are being developed around cancer and behavioral healthcare services that will likely become a blueprint for other markets. UnitedHealth Group’s influence in the market is growing with provider acquisitions that could ultimately give the payer greater control over clinical decision-making. Its subsidiary OptumCare completed its acquisition of DaVita Healthcare Partners in 2019, giving the insurer ownership of three large physician groups in Orange County and more than 4,600 physicians. The market is also home to a direct contract with Boeing and MemorialCare Health System that cuts out insurers and many accountable care arrangements. Expect further vertical alignment as the market coalesces around a growing payer-provider model in OptumCare.
