Tulsa’s large health systems are moving toward regionalized models of care as they compete for market share. Health systems also are hiring primary-care physicians and specialists to expand physician networks, while physicians build new care sites amid a growing demand for services. Key expansion projects include a physician-owned microhospital, an orthopedic ambulatory surgery center, and an urgent-care center that targets pulmonary patients. These expansions could fill gaps in care and lead to higher medical utilization. Health systems and physicians also continue to experiment with Medicare care coordination and bundled payment programs. Without clinically integrated networks, however, movement toward alternative payment models remains sluggish. Via a ballot initiative scheduled for November 2020, Oklahoma voters will have the chance to expand Medicaid, which would increase the ability to pay for prescription drugs to as many as 272,000 low-income adults in Oklahoma.
