Grand Rapids is embracing more alternative payment models, but the market’s movement toward risk-based payments is slow. Led by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan’s ACOs and reimbursement policies, the three dominant health systems are guiding care to less expensive settings by expanding urgent-care and ambulatory-care locations. Meanwhile, health systems are building partnerships throughout the state to increase their clout with insurers, primarily BCBS of Michigan, and to prepare for direct contracts with employers. Expect competition between health systems to step up in Grand Rapids as they offer more service lines and increase geographic saturation to attract patients.
