According to the most recent edition of the Competitive Edge HMO Directory released by InterStudy Publications, the number of full-service HMOs operating nationwide dropped from 541 in January 2001 to 500 in January 2002. Total HMO enrollment fell from 79.1 million in January 2001 to just 76.1 million enrollees in January 2002.

"This loss is largely attributed to continued industry consolidation and is particularly influence by one large national firm, Aetna U.S. Healthcare," said Tammy Lauer, Director of Research for InterStudy Publications. "Aetna experienced a net loss of 2.2 million HMO enrollees during this period."

The HMO Directory 12.2 is compiled by collecting data directly from the HMOs through the InterStudy National HMO Census. The directory provides a comprehensive look at the HMO industry reporting data as of January 1, 2002. The HMO Directory profiles full-service HMOs across the nation, presenting enrollment figures, service areas, addresses and key personnel for each HMO. Enrollment figures are broken down by lines of business, including group/commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and open-ended (point-of-service) products, as well as several other categories. The HMO Directory also chronicles changes in the HMO industry, with extensive listings of mergers and acquisitions, plan closures, and other consolidations.

InterStudy Publications, a publications firm specializing in research and reports for market driven health care, publishes the InterStudy Competitive Edge series semi-annually. The HMO Directory is the first of this three-part series on HMOs. Part II, The HMO Industry Report, analyzes plan growth and characteristics associated with growth in HMOs. Part III, The Regional Market Analysis, examines market structure and dynamics of metropolitan markets served by HMOs.
