HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, reports that four Charlotte-area health systems are competing to build a hospital in the growing Fort Mill or Rock Hill area of York County, South Carolina. According to the latest issue of the Charlotte Market Overview, Piedmont Healthcare System, owned by national for-profit Tenet Healthcare and the first system to submit a certificate of need application, has stated that it will defend its stronger proposal for a new facility, through litigation, if necessary.

"Northeastern York County is growing in population," said Patrick Powers, HealthLeaders-InterStudy senior analyst. "Tenet, Carolinas HealthCare System, Presbyterian Healthcare, and Hospital Partners of America have all applied to build facilities in the area. Tenet's Piedmont Medical Center is currently the only inpatient facility in the area, and has the benefit of incumbency. If it comes to litigation, they will aggressively protect their right to expand their service to York County residents. Presbyterian has recently gained support from South Carolina-based Palmetto Health to further their own bid."

Tenet's Piedmont Healthcare System proposes building a 100 bed facility in Fort Mill, costing about $125 million.

Carolinas proposes a 64-bed hospital in Rock Hill, costing about $73 million. The hospital would house 48 medical/surgical beds, 10 intensive care beds, six obstetrical beds, surgical services, endoscopy services, an MRI center, a diagnostic cardiac catheterization lab and a 24-hour emergency department.

Presbyterian proposes a 64-bed hospital in Fort Mill, costing about $83.5 million. It would house 50 medical/surgical beds, eight obstetrical beds, six intensive care beds, a diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory, a fixed-based MRI, a fixed CT/CAT scanner and 24-hour emergency department.
