Millennium Research Group (MRG) has conducted a detailed analysis of the $2.6 billion global ultrasound market and finds that the largest contributor to growth in the obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) segment of the market is the enthusiastic adoption of four-dimensional (4-D) imaging systems.
"The surge in demand has unintentionally spawned a gray market in fetal videos that have no pressing medical purpose," says David Plow, Senior Analyst at MRG. "Gray market prenatal ultrasounds have been subject to resounding condemnation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because it views this as an unapproved use of a medical device."
OB/GYN constitutes about 20% of the global ultrasound market -- a market that is expected to increase in size by $700 million to over $3 billion by 2011.
Global Markets for Ultrasound Systems 2007 is the first of five new global imaging reports by MRG -- Global Markets for General Radiography Systems, Global Markets for Computed Tomography Systems, Global Markets for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Systems, and Global Markets for Nuclear Medicine Systems will soon be available. The current report includes coverage of key industry competitors, including GE Healthcare, Siemens Medical, Philips Medical Systems, Toshiba, Aloka, Hitachi, and Shimadzu.
