HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of healthcare market intelligence, reports that San Antonio employers, predominantly small businesses with less than 50 employees, continue to seek ways to keep their health insurance premiums down with participation in wellness initiatives. According to the newly released San Antonio Market Overview report, local employers are enthusiastically embracing wellness programs, including those from Humana Inc., and local brokerage firm, Summit Insurance Group.
"San Antonio employers are riding the next wave of healthcare benefits with wellness initiatives," states Renee Burnham, HealthLeaders-InterStudy market analyst and author of the report. "With explosive population growth and ample opportunity for health plans to boost membership rolls, look for more companies to jump on the wellness bandwagon."
Humana's HealthMiles program is gaining members in San Antonio. The insurance product is only available to residents of Arizona, Florida and Texas. Partnered with Virgin LifeCare and Spectrum Health Clubs, member employees can earn Virgin HealthMiles points, which can be cashed in for retail products. Virgin Life Care's HealthZone stations are set up in Spectrum Athletic Club facilities and feature a scale, body-fat indicator, blood-pressure cuff and touch screen.
Summit Insurance Group offers premium discounts on self-insured health plans that target cardiac disease and diabetes. Summit officials are sharing the results with legislators in the hope that in the future, new laws will allow more flexibility in the programs. They would like to be able to change deductibles, health savings account funding and copayments to reflect the incorporation of wellness features.
