Decision Resources, Inc., one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and health care issues, finds that single-pill combinations accounted for about 10% of the type 2 diabetes drug market in 2003. The 2004-2006 period will be a crucial time for single-pill combinations, because two new single-pill combinations that are waiting for FDA approval will launch in the face of two other single-pill combinations losing patent protection.
The new PhysicianForum report entitled Type 2 Diabetes Part 2: Current Use, Issues, and Future Desired Design of Single-Pill Combination Agents also finds that physicians and HMO pharmacy directors agree on the three patient groups who are most likely to benefit from single-pill combinations.
"Physicians and HMO pharmacy directors both agree that the three patient groups likely to benefit from single-pill combinations are patients who cannot maintain glucose control on monotherapy, noncompliant patients, and patients who cannot maintain glucose control on multidrug therapy," said Donny Wong, Ph.D., analyst at Decision Resources.
Type 2 Diabetes Part 2: Current Use, Issues, and Future Desired Design of Single-Pill Combination Agents is based on a U.S. survey of 17 HMO pharmacy directors, 71 primary care physicians, and 91 endocrinologists. Their responses were compared to assess similarities and differences of opinion regarding clinical, economic, and scientific factors.
