Decision Resources, Inc., one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and health care issues, finds that owing to the success of current oral drugs and the focus on developing agents with extended treatment durations, oral chemotherapy will play a larger role in the future treatment of cancer. This evolution, however, may be strongly affected by the changing reimbursement environment in the United States.

A new PhysicianForum primary market research report entitled Oral Chemotherapeutic Agents: Key Success Factors and Reimbursement Issues finds that while the use of oral chemotherapeutic agents is on the rise, some physicians point to "reduced reimbursement for clinicians" as a factor that continues to encourage use of more traditional, intravenous chemotherapy treatment.

"Oncologists and managed care pharmacy directors agree that oral chemotherapy agents are assuming a greater role as more than 80% of the physicians we surveyed said their use of these agents increased between May 2003 and May 2005," said Joanne Graham, Ph.D., analyst at Decision Resources, Inc. "However, only about 20% of the pharmacy directors surveyed said they foresee an increase in copayments for certain oral agents, including erlotinib and temozolomide."

Oral Chemotherapeutic Agents: Key Success Factors and Reimbursement Issues is based on a U.S. survey of 20 HMO pharmacy directors and 96 oncologists. Their responses were compared to assess similarities and differences of opinion regarding clinical, economic, and scientific factors.
