HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds that all but two Illinois HMOs showed a profit in 2004, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois led the pack with $145 million in net income. According to the latest issue of the Illinois Health Plan Analysis from HealthLeaders-InterStudy, the Blues more than doubled its previous record of $58 million, set in 2001.

"Look for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois to use its surplus to strengthen its reserves and invest in information technology," said Rick Byrne, HealthLeaders-InterStudy analyst. "They are really in the catbird seat in Illinois."

Other health plan news in Illinois: * Illinois could do away with its Medicaid managed care program if it is unable to reach a compromise with Medicaid HMOs. * UniCare hopes to capture some of the uninsured in its membership with its BasicChoice line of lower-cost benefit plans in Illinois and eight other states. * A new Medicare Advantage PPO, Urbana-based Health Alliance, began marketing in April.
