HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds that all but two Illinois HMOs showed a profit in 2004, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois led the pack with $145 million in net income. According to the latest issue of the Illinois Health Plan Analysis from HealthLeaders-InterStudy, the Blues more than doubled its previous record of $58 million, set in 2001.

"Look for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois to use its surplus to strengthen its reserves and invest in information technology," said Rick Byrne, HealthLeaders-InterStudy analyst. "They are really in the catbird seat in Illinois."
