Decision Resources, Inc., one of the world's leading research and advisory firms focusing on pharmaceutical and health care issues, finds that the launch of drugs from Sanofi-Aventis, Alizyme and Arena Pharmaceuticals will propel the obesity drug treatment market to more than $1.5 billion in sales by 2014.

The new Pharmacor report entitled Obesity: Heavy Profits from Lean Pipelines finds that Sanofi-Aventis's Acomplia (rimonabant), expected to launch in 2006, will be the first obesity drug treatment that will be efficacious against related comorbidities such as hypertension and dyslipidemia. Additional follow-on therapies launching in the next decade, including drugs from Alizyme and Arena Pharmaceuticals, will offer much needed improvements in efficacy, safety, and tolerability. The report also finds that the uptake of drugs in this market will be constrained by the lack of reimbursement available for obesity treatments.

"The obesity market will continue to expand owing to rising prevalence and increasing awareness of obesity as a disease with life-threatening implications over the long-term," said Stephanie Krebs, analyst at Decision Resources, Inc. "However, the continued lack of reimbursement for obesity drugs will inhibit customer uptake, particularly in low-income patient populations. Additionally, the complex nature of obesity will continue to hinder the development of a single agent that is efficacious for the majority of obese patients."
