HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds national Medicaid companies like Centene Corp. and Molina Healthcare are looking to Ohio and Indiana for expansion. According to the latest issue of the Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana Health Plan Analysis, both Ohio and Indiana are hoping that managed care will help slow skyrocketing growth in the cost of their Medicaid programs.

"In both states, there is huge potential," said Jane DuBose, HealthLeaders-InterStudy analyst. "Some 190,000 Ohio Medicaid recipients will be required to be in the state's managed care program later this year, and some 180,000 new members will be added to Indiana's Medicaid managed care program. Health plans in Ohio have been busy signing contracts with providers, and so far seven companies appear to have an inside track on participating in the program."

Other Health Plan News in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana: * CHA Health, the Lexington, Ky.-based health plan, is expanding into parts of Indiana bordering Louisville. * Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is still the king of the financial hill in Kentucky and Ohio, racking up a combined $152 million in profits on its HMOs' licenses in the two states through the third quarter of 2004. * Enrollment in health savings accounts has exceeded the expectations of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, but other carriers report mixed results with some seeing more interest than actual buying.
