According to the recently published Competitive Edge Managed Care Industry Report from InterStudy Publications, eighty-nine Managed Care Organizations across the country now own both HMOs and PPOs and operate them as complementary lines of business. Overall, HMOs have continued their slow decline in enrollment, while PPOs increased their number of covered lives, buoyed by strong growth within National Managed Care Firms.

"HMOs and PPOs have for some time been seen as managed care rivals," said Rebecca Waller, project manager for InterStudy Publications. "In reality, many Managed Care Organizations have found that offering a mix of both plans can appeal to the widest spectrum of customers, including individuals and employer groups."

The Competitive Edge Managed Care Industry Report focuses on enrollment trends, lists the top 25 largest Managed Care Organizations, analyzes drivers of HMO and PPO enrollment growth and decline, and presents state-by-state enrollment information. By offering analysis of both HMOs and PPOs, this study provides a more complete examination of the two most dominant forms of managed health care and of the health insurance market as a whole.
