Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical ad healthcare issues, announced today the availability of primary research on obesity. The research includes surveys of primary care physicians discussing how they manage overweight and obese patients. One hundred twenty U.S. and European primary care physicians with large practices (average patient load of 2,800) were surveyed about diagnosis, referral and treatment patterns for the disease and their projected use of novel agents currently in development.

Among the key findings from the surveys, compiled in the PhysicianForum report entitled Obesity, is the conclusion that there is no standard method for clinical diagnosis of overweight or obese patients.

"The primary care physicians we surveyed in the United States and Europe vary in their familiarity with body mass index (BMI) as a diagnostic tool," said Nicky Lowney, analyst Decision Resources. "Over 90% of physicians in both regions list BMI as one of their top three diagnostic tools, but when asked specifically about their use of BMI during diagnosis, 56% of U.S. physicians and 73% of European physicians report using BMI."

About Obesity

Although many people still view obesity as the result of a lack of willpower, evidence presents this condition as a complex, chronic disease. Losing weight and maintaining weight loss are exceedingly difficult for many overweight and obese individuals. The United States will remain the largest and most dynamic market for weight-loss drugs because of the staggering number of obese and overweight individuals and better acceptance of drug treatment for obesity. The majority of weight-loss drug sales will occur in the United States, with the U.S. market representing 74% of sales in 2000, 76% in 2005, and 80% in 2010.
