HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, reports that Omaha's mostly profitable hospitals are moving into fast-growing areas of Omaha. According to the latest issue of the Omaha Market Overview, each of the three nonprofit health systems controlling the Omaha market are building facilities on the west side of Omaha, particularly along West Dodge Road; and one health system is also moving into Sarpy County, southeast of Omaha.

"At the moment, Alegent Health's Lakeside Hospital is the only full-service hospital on Omaha's growing west side," said Patrick Powers, HealthLeaders-InterStudy senior analyst. "But both Methodist Health System and The Nebraska Medical Center will be pursuing projects in the area as well. I'd describe their competition as friendly and beneficial for improving local healthcare. There is certainly room in the market for all three systems."

The Nebraska Medical Center is building a "mini-campus" to accommodate patients on the west side of Omaha; it will serve as the teaching hospital's second location. In addition, the Nebraska Medical Center has a new 60-bed hospital in the works in Bellevue, in fast-growing Sarpy County. The facility is expected to be complete by October 2008. Methodist Health System plans to open a 70-bed women's inpatient facility in 2008. In the meantime, Methodist HealthWest Clinic is offering outpatient women's services, which began in April 2006. Alegent Health opened Omaha's first retail-based clinic -- Quick Care -- in a local westside Hy-Vee grocery store, and plans to open several more during 2006.

Other news about the Omaha healthcare market:

UNMC Physicians and The Nebraska Medical Center developed an outpatient cancer center on the west side that provides additional income for the physician group and more market share for the hospital.
