HealthLeaders-InterStudy, the managed care business of Decision Resources, finds that Texas, Wisconsin, and Kansas are the most competitive states for managed care business, with no single managed care plan having greater than a 20% share of HMO and PPO covered lives. Hawaii, Alabama, and Connecticut - where one plan dominates each market with at least 50% market share - are considered the least competitive states.

"In Connecticut, three firms account for 80% of the combined HMO and PPO market," said Lance Wolkenbrod, program manager for HealthLeaders-InterStudy. "By contrast, the top three plans in Texas make up only 36% of that state's managed care market. It is critical that firms such as pharmaceutical companies and health plans aiming to influence or compete with managed care companies at the state level understand these regional differences."

This data was gleaned from the recently released Managed Market State Surveyor Fall 2004 database, which provides integrated HMO and PPO enrollment, plan, and market share data at the state level. The Managed Market State Surveyor Fall 2004 database includes data from every U.S. state and is derived from the industry's most reliable managed care research methods.
