Decision Resources, Inc., one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and health care issues, finds that although most primary care physicians and cardiologists treat cardiovascular disease patients with a multidrug regimen, both doctors and HMO pharmacy directors agree that compliance is compromised when patients are treated with multiple pills.

A new PhysicianForum report entitled Combination Therapies for Cardiovascular Disorders finds that compliance and convenience are major advantages of single-pill combinations.

"Sixty-five percent of cardiologists say that improved convenience for the patient is a major advantage of single-pill combinations, and 35% add that improved patient compliance is also a strong attribute in favor of this type of formulation," said John Earl, Ph.D., analyst at Decision Resources. "Primary care physicians are less impressed by convenience for the patient; only 44% of these physicians say that this attribute is a main advantage of the single-pill combination. However, 54% of primary care physicians believe that improved compliance is one of the leading attributes of single-pill combinations. Slightly more than half of all physicians surveyed believe that a cost benefit for the patient exists with single-pill combinations."

Combination Therapies for Cardiovascular Disorders is based on a U.S. survey of 17 HMO pharmacy directors, 50 primary care physicians (both family practice and internal medicine physicians), and 52 cardiologists. Their responses were compared to assess similarities and differences of opinion regarding clinical, economic, and scientific factors.
