A few strong healthcare providers and insurers, all with roughly equal market shares, dominate the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota healthcare market, finds HealthLeaders- InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence. According to the latest issue of the Minneapolis Market Overview, six integrated delivery systems account for more than 82 percent of the area's inpatient discharges and three major insurers enroll the majority of the population in managed care and self-insured health plans.
"Even while the Twin Cities healthcare market is highly competitive, the area's healthcare providers and insurers work together on various quality improvement programs," said Patrick Powers, HealthLeaders-InterStudy senior analyst. "Multimillion-dollar health system investments in clinical system automation, including electronic medical record implementation, are showing benefits in healthcare quality and efficiency."
An aging center city population combined with strong population growth in exurban Anoka, Dakota, and Scott counties has triggered a hospital building boom. Demand for specialty care is strong, and has led a number of hospitals to invest in cardiac care, a profit center for hospitals. Since 2000, six new heart-care centers have opened in the Twin Cities. In St. Paul alone, three healthcare providers have a combined $110 million of hospital expansion and specialty center construction underway.
Other news about the Minneapolis healthcare market: * All major commercial Twin Cities health plans now offer a variety of consumer-driven and health savings account-type products. * HealthPartners Health Plan was the top-rated health plan in the state, according to a national employer survey. Its successful pay-for- performance initiatives have resulted in "buy-in" from area providers, largely as a result of its tight medical group-model and affiliation with the highly respected Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement.
