HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, reports that national attention is focused on the Des Moines healthcare market due to industry-leading efforts by local physicians at implementing several healthcare quality-improvement initiatives. According to the latest issue of the Des Moines Market Overview, the American Medical Group Association (AMGA) has awarded Mercy Clinics Inc. two educational grants for best practices in managing hypertension.

"The Des Moines award is part AMGA's nationwide effort to improve the quality and delivery of healthcare by medical groups," said Patrick Powers, HealthLeaders-InterStudy senior analyst. "A major aim of AMGA's program is to develop an alternative approach to measuring quality in physician healthcare based on a compilation of best practices of physician quality healthcare."

Mercy Clinics is participating in AMGA's Results-Based Payment System Initiative, which is part of the national physician organization's effort to develop a new model for reimbursement, based on a set of benchmarks other than those used by current pay-for-performance programs. AMGA is looking at efficiency in the delivery of care, timeliness, quality, and appropriate care within medical groups such as care coordination, outcomes, and the patient's role in the healthcare process. The determination of payment would include case mix, risk adjustment and patient satisfaction. Ultimately, the results will contribute to a nationwide compilation of best practices. AMGA's study, which began in March 2006, will continue through March 2007.
