According to a recent report from InterStudy Publications, a division of Decision Resources, Inc., that specializes in the managed care industry, many HMOs added members in 2002. However, the Competitive Edge HMO Industry Report 13.2 finds total HMO enrollment continued to decline as the shakeout of the last five years reaches its end.

"There were pockets of growth reported by Medicaid plans and some larger Blues," said Tammy Lauer, director of research for InterStudy Publications. "Overall, however, national HMO enrollment declined as plans shed unprofitable commercial and Medicare businesses."

The Competitive Edge HMO Industry Report focuses on enrollment trends, lists the top 25 largest- and fastest-growing HMOs, analyzes drivers of HMO enrollment growth and decline, and presents state-by-state enrollment information.
