UnitedHealth Group will be acquiring PacifiCare Health Systems in an $8.11 billion deal that will create a powerhouse in the health insurance industry, with major strength in California and the rest of the West Coast, and in the specialized Medicare market.

  * With 26 million members, the resulting health plan would be second only to giant WellPoint Inc. nationally. * United's new strength in the Medicare market will challenge Kaiser Permanente and WellPoint's Medicare business on the entire West Coast. * Despite past snags in healthcare system consolidation, seen particularly in the delays in WellPoint's acquisition of Anthem last year, the United-PacifiCare deal is expected to go smoothly.

Expect to see significant changes in the healthcare business landscape on the West Coast, particularly in the Medicare market segment.

Market Analyst Paula DeWitt, of HealthLeaders-InterStudy, is available to speak about the financial and political implications of the acquisition. To speak with Ms. DeWitt, please contact Alex Jablokow at Decision Resources at 781-296-2562 or ajablokow@dresources.com.
