Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms for pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, announced today the availability of primary research on COX-2 Inhibitors. The research includes surveys of one hundred primary care physicians discussing prescription trends involving COX-2 Inhibitors as well as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and the impact of regulatory issues, side effects, new indications, and competition from future entrants on usage patterns.
Among the key findings from the surveys, compiled in the PhysicianForum report entitled COX-2 Inhibitors: Current Perceptions and Future Opportunities, is that adequate pain relief is the most important unmet need.
"Approximately 80% of physicians in the United States and Europe believe that the analgesic efficacy of COX-2 inhibitors could be improved upon, because 20-40% of patients do not experience a satisfactory analgesic effect with these agents," said Carlos Chirinos, analyst at Decision Resources.
Easing the Pain - COX-2 Inhibitors
Celecoxib (Pharmacia/Pfizer's Celebrex) and rofecoxib (Merck's Vioxx) - selective COX-2 inhibitors - are among the most successful analgesic products ever launched, with combined sales of $5.7 billion in 2001. Despite this success, the surveys show the majority (64%) of the U.S. primary care physicians believe that Celebrex and Vioxx have the same efficacy as conventional NSAIDs, but European physicians hold a more favorable opinion of these new agents. The key driving factor for prescribing these two drugs is their perceived gastric benefit, not their ability to reduce pain.
PhysicianForum is a new primary research service from Decision Resources. The service offers access to high-volume-prescribing primary care physicians, specialists and manage care representatives in the United States and Europe; analysis of events and responses to them; insight into prescribing patterns; and predictions for the pharmaceutical market based on the results.
