InterStudy Publications, a division of Decision Resources that specializes in the managed care industry, found that total U.S. HMO enrollment continues to decline, falling to 71.8 million total enrolled members as of January 1, 2003. According to the Competitive Edge HMO Directory 13.2, HMO enrollment has decreased by 4.3 million since January 1, 2002.

"The number of HMO plans has dropped dramatically in the last year, falling from 500 in January 2002 to 454 in January 2003," said Tammy Lauer, director of research for InterStudy Publications. "A lot of this decline is due to Aetna, which closed 27 plans in the last year, almost all of which were Prudential Healthcare Plans the company acquired in 1999."

The Competitive Edge HMO Directory 13.2 is used by health care analysts to track competing HMOs and compare HMO growth in various states or regions. The directory identifies key players in a given state and presents each HMO profile in a consistent manner for easy comparison. It also provides information on changes in providers and enrollment for the past three years to allow extended comparisons.

InterStudy publishes the InterStudy Competitive Edge series semi-annually. The HMO Directory is the first of this three-part series on HMOs. Part II, The HMO Industry Report, analyzes plan growth and characteristics associated with growth in HMOs. Part III, The Regional Market Analysis, examines market structure and dynamics of metropolitan markets served by HMOs.
