HealthLeaders-InterStudy, the leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that in response to the growing shift among employers from fully-insured to self-insured plans, the company is offering Employer Vantage, a Web-based product that integrates multiple data sets to identify the health benefits the Fortune 1000 companies, and their subsidiaries, offer.

Through an easy-to-use, Web-based interface, Employer Vantage integrates multiple unique data sets, including proprietary data from HealthLeaders- InterStudy and respected third party data sources. Employer Vantage allows pharmaceutical company national account managers to understand the relationships that exist between employers, health plans and pharmacy benefit managers by connecting Fortune 1000 companies and their subsidiaries, 396 managed care organizations and more than 40 pharmacy benefit managers. Understanding these connections is important to pharmaceutical and diagnostic manufacturers looking to allocate sales force resources and identify partnership opportunities.

The shift to self-insured plans is evidenced by membership data from the nation's largest plans. For example, according to data from HealthLeaders- InterStudy's Managed Market Surveyor-Rx, as of January 2008, fee-based health plans represent nearly 69 percent of Aetna's book of business, while risk- based health plans comprise about 31 percent.

"In some regions, the largest employers are self-insured, making them an influential driver of the prescribing of brand name drugs for a particular market," said Russell Workman, Principal Director of Data Operations for HealthLeaders-InterStudy. "Many of these self-insured employers also work directly with pharmacy benefit managers instead of working with an insurer. Knowing where these employers are, and what benefits they offer, is a key component of intelligence gathering for any comprehensive sales strategy."
