HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds that HMOs in Connecticut and New Jersey are in good shape financially, thanks to improved medical cost trends and disciplined underwriting. According to the latest issue of the TriState Health Plan Analysis from HealthLeaders-InterStudy, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut reported the strongest profit margin, at 7.6 percent.

"Health plans are taking advantage of their strong financial position by investing in information technology to better position themselves for the future," said Micaela Brown, HealthLeaders-InterStudy analyst. "And since the large-group market is mostly sewn up, health plans are mining the individual and small-group markets, trying to reach the uninsured who are eligible for commercial insurance."

Other health plan news in the TriState area: * Aetna has teamed with a group of higher education institutions and an investment firm to offer tenured faculty and their families more affordable group retiree Medicare benefits tied to a tax-advantaged investment account. * New York's competitive health insurance market will heat up even more now that the state's highest court has affirmed Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield's conversion to a for-profit company, bringing the 2002 lawsuit filed by Consumers Union to an end. * Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is ramping up efforts to get physicians to do electronic prescribing and have access to electronic medical records.
