HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, reports that all three of Tucson's largest non-profit hospital systems have significant expansion plans under way. According to the latest issue of the Tucson Market Overview, the rapidly expanding population means enough new patient volume to go around, so the systems can grow market share without directly competing.

"In other healthcare markets around the country, you see health systems competing toe-to-toe by building facilities near each other," said Patrick Powers, HealthLeaders-InterStudy senior analyst. "But in Tucson, the systems are siting their new facilities in growing, underserved communities spaced well apart from competing hospitals. Pima County is expected to grow from 840,000 people in 2000 to over a million in 2010. Faced with such explosive growth, Tucson's health systems have to stay so focused on getting facilities and services up and running quickly for the new residents that they have no time, energy or resources to engage in the luxury of intra-market rivalry."

TMC HealthCare is building a new 90-bed hospital in Rincon, a fast-growing southeast suburb of Tucson. With an estimated $90 million price tag, the acute-care facility is expected to open in 2008 or 2009. The hospital will include emergency room and outpatient services and obstetrics.

Carondelet Health Network is buying land to build a full-service community hospital in Sahuarita, a Pima County town 15 miles outside Tucson. The facility will be built in partnership with the city of Sahuarita and the Green Valley Community Coordinating Council.

University Medical Center is doubling the size of its emergency department and trauma center in a $15 million project expected to be completed in 2008, and tripling the size of the Arizona Cancer Center by late 2006 or early 2007.
