HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds that Humana Inc. is one of the few health plans bidding on Medicare's new PPO regions, according to the latest issue of the Georgia & Alabama Health Plan Analysis. Humana is bidding to offer regional PPOs in Georgia and South Carolina (region 8) and in Alabama and Tennessee (region 10), as well as in other parts of the country where it has a strong presence.

"Don't expect a lot of activity on the Medicare regional PPO front, because the new regions are a geographic challenge," said Micaela Brown, Georgia and Alabama market analyst. "There are only 11 single-state regions; the rest are all two-state and multiple-state regions, and it's just too hard for insurers to form a network for such wide-ranging areas. But many national and local insurers, such as HealthSpring of Alabama, are interested in offering a drug benefit."

Other Health Plan News in Georgia and Alabama: * HMOs in Georgia and Alabama are seeing softer profit margins despite higher revenues. But they have a good handle on managing medical and pharmacy costs and are investing money in technology and infrastructure for consumer-driven products and care-management programs. * Kaiser Permanente is rolling out health savings accounts in several of its markets, including Atlanta. * A consortium of large employers, know as the Affordable Health Care Solutions Coalition, is embarking on a major effort to get more of its part-time, seasonal and contract workers insured.
