HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care industry intelligence, finds that the three large hospital systems in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point are responding to rapid increases in emergency room admissions with multimillion-dollar capital expenditures for new, larger emergency departments. According to the latest issue of the Greensboro Market Overview, Novant Health Winston-Salem Region, Moses Cone Health System, and Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, which together have 79 percent of the area's hospital inpatient discharges, are also investing in new or upgraded facilities for intensive care, heart and vascular services, radiology and outpatient services.

"Greensboro's building boom mirrors a nationwide trend," said Patrick Powers, senior analyst. "We'll see this local and national trend continue for at least five years, as baby boomers utilize more inpatient and outpatient services. Hospitals in north central North Carolina are also challenged by increased numbers of uninsured, who tend to go through the emergency department to get access to primary-care services."

Novant Health's Forsyth Medical Center recently completed an $18 million, 55,000 square foot emergency department. Moses Cone plans to double the size of its ED at Annie Penn Hospital. Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is planning a 55,000-square-foot replacement for its emergency department and Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden recently broke ground on its new emergency room.

Other news about the Greensboro healthcare market: * Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina started offering an HSA product for individuals Jan. 1, 2006. * HMOs saw their market share in the Greensboro area drop by 2 percentage points last year, to 14 percent.
