The Impact of Medical Devices on Healthcare Delivery – Challenges to and Benefits of Implementation

DRG conducted a literature review with the objective of identifying published examples of service impact and system design models for innovative non-pharmaceutical health technologies. This white paper provides a detailed summary of six case studies of the medical technologies identified in the review and through handsearching, based on DRG’s expertise on these device markets. The studies discussed include a diverse range of technologies, including diagnostic, monitoring, and therapeutic devices, for which economic studies had been published assessing the service impact of an innovative device relative to standard of care. An in depth analysis of the studies was conducted to identify themes where medical devices were able to impact on service change/ delivery and assess how these had been evaluated in the peer reviewed literature.
