Implementation of bundled-payment agreements is moving toward substantial growth. How this trend will take place is not clear, but the new Oncology Care Model from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services provides important clues about the future of bundled payments, defined as a fixed payment for professional and facility charges in an episode of medical services over a specific time period. The Oncology Care Model, a multipayer pilot to start in spring 2016, will include payments and performance incentives for physician practices providing episodes of chemotherapy to Medicare beneficiaries. CMS also is encouraging applications from commercial insurers, Medicare Advantage plans, state Medicaid programs, and Medicaid managed care plans.
