Based on our U.S. Physician & Payer Forum report entitled Hospital Anti-Infectives: Insights on the Uptake, Formulary Inclusion, and Reimbursement of Emerging Antibiotics in the U.S. AND our Hospital Insight Series: Hospital Anti-Infectives report, Decision Resources, Inc. is offering this exclusive webinar. Because this presentation will feature major findings, it is ONLY available to purchasers of BOTH of these reports.

The anti-bacterial hospital market is crowded and dynamic as growing rates of antibiotic resistance continue to present commercial opportunities for novel agents. Drug development efforts are directed primarily towards addressing unmet needs in the treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Clostridium difficile infections and drug-resistant gram-negative pathogens. Although several emerging therapies target MRSA, the late-stage pipeline for gram-negative pathogens is dry and presents a significant market opportunity. Therapies that treat smaller and underserved difficult-to-treat infections such as prosthetic joint infections and sepsis also have important commercial potential. Surveyed infectious disease specialists and internists have revealed their preferred line of treatment for gram-positive and gram-negative infections, their choice of top attributes for difficult-to-treat infections and their anticipated use of key emerging therapies. Surveyed pharmacy directors have disclosed the most influential factors in the formulary inclusion of an antibiotic and the measures they consider in the decision for cost-effectiveness analysis.
This webinar, presented by Decision Resources Analyst Charu Vepari, Ph.D., will answer the following questions:
- What are the leading indications, patient comorbidities and patient risk factors in the hospital anti-infectives market? With regard to treatment intent—empiric, confirmed/documented or prophylaxis—how is the patient population segmented?
- What percent of infections are due to key gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens? Who are the key prescribers in the hospital setting with respect to cost, patient share and days of therapy?
- Are there differences among infectious disease specialists and internists in their concern regarding current treatments available for key pathogens? What is the preferred first-line treatment for suspected and confirmed MRSA and gram-negative infections? How common is compounding of IV vancomycin for oral administration in patients with infections caused by C. difficile?
- What do clinicians consider to be the top three most difficult-to-treat indications for MRSA and gram-negative infections? What are the attributes clinicians look for in a drug for the treatment of these infections? How do clinicians anticipate using key emerging therapies for infections caused by C. difficile, MRSA and gram-negative pathogens?
- Who are the individuals with the greatest influence on hospital antibiotic formulary decisions and what are the most influential factors in the formulary inclusion of an antibiotic? What factors are the most important to pharmacy directors for assessing cost of antibiotic therapy and which measures do pharmacy directors consider in their decision for cost-effectiveness analysis?
Dr. Vepari will conduct a live Q & A session after the presentation.

About the Speaker
Charu Vepari, Ph.D., is an analyst in the infectious diseases group at Decision Resources. Prior to joining the company, she served in several teaching roles, including as an instructor at Tufts University and as an adjunct professor of bioengineering at Olin College of Engineering, where she taught an undergraduate course on topics in bioengineering. Dr. Vepari also worked at Wyeth as a process development associate. Part of her duties there were to develop and validate purification processes of recombinant protein biologics and to support investigational new drug (IND) and biologics license application (BLA) filings. She earned a B.S. in biotechnology from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Ph.D. in chemical and bioengineering from Tufts University, where she studied special surface functionalization to control cell responses.
